The captain of the England Cricket team, Alastair Cook, has said that ECB has taken the right decision by appointing a separate coach for the limited over formats of the game.
ECB has recently appointed Ashley Giles as the coach of the ODI and T20 side, while, Andy Flower will continue to coach the test side. The ODI series against India is going to be Giles’ first assignment as the coach of England.
Giles retired from international cricket five years back. He was a left arm spinner who played 54 test matches for England in which he took 143 wickets at an average of 40.60. Giles also represented England in ODIs. He played 62 ODIs in which he took 55 wickets at an average of 37.61. Giles was a member of the test squad of England which had won the Ashes series against Australia in 2005.
Giles had a successful tenure as the coach of Warwickshire. The Warwickshire team did remarkably well under his guidance which prompted ECB to appoint him as the head coach of the limited over squads of England.
When asked about Giles’ appointment as the coach of ODI and T20 side, Cook said, “I think it’s the right decision by ECB. Andy Flower had a huge amount of workload on his shoulders and he was hardly getting time to be with his family. So, it was getting difficult for him. Now, with Gilo’s appointment, Andy can give time to his family which is great.”
“Gilo has done a wonderful job as the coach of Warwickshire. He is a great reader of the game and is quick in finding out the technical weaknesses of the players. I feel that he is going to be successful as the coach of England.”
